50's Decor Garage Sale find

I teased you the other day when I told you I bought something that I described as "so ugly, it's awesome." Well feast your eyes on this ugliness awesomeness!

This past weekend was the Citywide Garage Sale and I went for the very first time. It's held at one of Austin's Event Centers so it's pretty big and it's 'good stuff' instead of Uncle Harry's hand-me downs that have been hanging out in someone's attic for 20 years.

So, here's my purchase...
Two little stools that I wondered if they'd even 'fit' in my house, but they just 'spoke' to me when I saw them. Am I crazy? There's a little something about them that stirred up some nostalgia and reminded me of my grandparents house. As I was paying for them, I was thinking, "John's totally going to think I fell off my rocker this time!" He snickered when he saw them, but was so kind to hold his words.
And, look at this! They're stackable. Fun, right?
The big question...do I recover them or leave them as is? It's fun to have an item or two in each room that throws the balance off a bit and adds some interest. I think the juxtaposition is great. That being said, I can really see them looking fabulous with a new finish and updated coverings.

What do you think? Keep them true to their era or bring them into this century?

I hope you have a happy weekend, friends. Hopefully the sun will shine bright and the birds will be singing. Go soak in spring!

If you're interested in design services, I'd love to help you.

  1. Those are fun finds! I like their vintage look but maybe some paint would even help? Tough call. I always try and live with it for a while until it speaks to me and tells me what to paint/cover it in or to leave it alone. :)

  2. This made me smile, big time! I LOVE the shape of those cushions and when they stacked, icing on the cake, too fun! I agree with Ange, I'd live with them for a bit!

  3. I would lysol the tops to be sure they were clean for my home then wash the legs with a murphy's soap and then keep them original to their 'look' they are adorable.

  4. Oh my stars, that is so cool that they are stackable. I wonder what their history is.... I think you should live with them for a little while. You can always paint them later.

  5. I say keep them true to their era at least for now, and then you can always change them. I love the feel they add to the room. Great finds!

  6. I love them and would have grabbed them myself. If the upholstery is in good condition I would definitely leave them, Dana! They are reminiscent of an era which is great. Changing them down the road is always an option. Great find!
