I was thinking I'd hang the gold mirror above the nightstand so I was inclined to change the color of the trim. Originally, I thought I'd paint it navy. I had a heck of a time finding the right shade of navy, then I ran across this color (Gentlemen's Gray) at Benjamin Moore and loved it. It totally ties in the color of my pillows. But now that I see it directly up against the mirror...I just can't decide if it's right!
Here's where I started...
BEFORE
And here it is now...
AFTER
I think what is throwing me is the square corner pieces. It looks too heavy. Or is it the color? Aaaggghhh! Why can't I figure this one out?
I've thought about possibly adding a gold glaze over the blue to soften the look. I have no idea if that would work or not!
Or do I like it?! Sometimes it just takes a little time to get used to seeing something in a new light. I'm planning on leaving it until I finish the giant art piece I'm painting which will hang directly adjacent to it. Also, I'd like a new lamp...is that what throws this whole little vignette off-balance? It's not styled currently, but I don't plan to add too much more since I'm not a clutter person. (Sorry, you're reading my internal thought process!)
To prove to myself that this wasn't a completely hair-brained idea, I went searching for similar pieces. Most people do this first, because that would've been the logical thing, right?
This is the only piece I found...
Here's the shot I posted Monday to give you an idea of the full view...
Okay, friends, please don't hold back on sharing your thoughts and opinions...
Do I...
keep it?
return to the original color?
go after another color?
add a gold glaze?
paint those silly square corner pieces something different?
stop stressing over something so insignificant? :)
Surprise me with your brilliant ideas!

i honestly love it! i think it is unique, a little glam, and i love it! feel free to share it at my party to get you some more opinions, too. :)
ReplyDeletekeep it! i'm sure your design friends will have some great opinions, but from someone who knows nothing about this stuff, I just think it looks good...I love it!
ReplyDeleteI think it's probably the mix of colors that's throwing you off - the blue paint on the night stand, the color of your walls, and the lampshade - there's lots of different undertones there. I think I'd warm it up and do the gold on the nightstand and switch out the lamp shade. Would you do a white lamp shade with some accent trim? I'll probably inspect your picture many times today :)
ReplyDeleteI think the paint job looks great! I love that mirror. I would probably switch something up with the lamp. Change the lampshade or color... or consider wall sconces.
ReplyDeleteYou could try painting the square corner pieces gold to match the gold mirror ... or what about buying a couple of similarly shaped square knobs, painting them and putting them on the front panels to look like pulls? Or square mirrored pulls? Maybe the front is too plain now that it isn't all mirrored...
ReplyDeleteI like it, I think maybe adding some gold and a different lamp will help. The room is coming together beautifully!
ReplyDeleteThis is my 3rd time back to look at it, I'm on the fence, too! I do like it and I think the lamp is what has me questioning it. How about shopping around your house (or Homegoods) for a few different lamps and show us tomorrow! :)
ReplyDeleteDana, I really love that blue against your wall color, with the gold mirror and pops of orangey/coral - this is all so subjective isn't it?? I do agree with Holly that a white lampshade (maybe a bigger drum shade?) would work really well in there for a little contrast.
ReplyDeleteI vote to keep the blue, including the corner squares!
I think you should 100% keep it and I don't think you need to add any glaze! It looks amazing! Once you have a different lamp shade that will make a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteI actually believe what's throwing you is the gold mirror. If you're going to mix metals (which I love) you need an equal amount of both. From the picture, I only see the gold mirror, while the mirrored doors give the look of silver...same with the grey bedspread. Have you considered using different art over the table and putting the mirror centered above your headboard? I LOVE the mirror against your wall color so I don't think you should ditch it.
I know whatever you decide will be beautiful. But please keep them! xo
I agree with Delightful design - the gold mirror is throwing you off. Especially since it's above the cabinet mirrors that look silver. If you glaze anything, add silver, then black ( or your navy) on top of the gold.
ReplyDeletei came back to look again and read all the opinions.... i love the gold mirror with it- i really do! i love blue and gold and the mirror isn't metal, just shiny, so i think they all play nicely together. i agree that it is the lamp that perhaps needs some mixing up... maybe a new shade and spray paint the base in that coral/red color from the bedding.
ReplyDeleteI really like the color too mixed with the bedding and the stools at the end of the bed. But you are right in thinking that something is a bit off. Maybe something with the lamp needs to change? I would leave the color and play around with other things. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI would love to see what it looks like with a light colored drum shade(for some reason I'm picturing a short and squatty one;) on the lamp and maybe use the pretty mirror in another area since you'll have two mirrored nightstands on that side of the room. Can't wait to see how it all turns out!
ReplyDeleteI like it! I think you're absolutely right, you are just second guessing yourself because it's not finished being styled. Style the top of the nightstand and a new lamp and I think it will look great!
ReplyDeleteHey Girl! Ok, cool it! You're sweating this one too much. It looks amazing. My opinion is leave the nightstand alone. It's a beautiful color and adds some drama. Once I looked at the whole room a few times, it works. I don't know if you plan on keeping those navy pillows that you labeled, but it pulls the color onto the bed. I do agree though, I think it's the lamp. You have two metalics that might be the problem. Hmmmm? Can't wait to see what you decide.
ReplyDeleteI love it but I agree that it needs a little something. I think you should either add some kind of gold glaze or just do a little gold tole painting on the 4 corners. Also, I think the lamp could use a new shade or possibly be painted! The scale is right but it just doesn't flow properly. Great job on painting this piece. It must have been difficult with all that mirror. It looks very professional!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Pam on this one...the lamp is throwing everything off. I think it's a lot of different finishes in a small space. I like it, but I'm not in love with it. I would start with changing the lamp and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks amazing as well, and would not change it. It's a very cool look. If you are dead set on changing it, I might consider a brighter blue to pop the color against the reflective surface. A cobalt maybe?
ReplyDeleteLet us know:0)
I would definitely keep it, Dana. It looks great with the gold mirror - great combination. It is something different to you so you need to get used to it. Adding gold will take away from the gorgeous color.
